SFFS: Another THE CURE Snippet

Well, this week's been a rough one for various reasons. But no worries, fair travelers, we're right on schedule for another week of Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday. After last week's snippet, it was almost imperative that we continue the scene until the end. So, here you go with another snippet from my standalone novel, The Cure, carrying on with Mila's standoff with the two Guardians over Project Genesis.

“I’m afraid I’ve not heard of that project. Why don’t you tell me about it?”

The man turned to his partner and said, “I told you she wouldn’t listen.”

The female Guardian gave a weak chuckle, her cold stare remaining focused on Mila. “You’ll have to excuse my partner. He tends to be impatient.”

The man’s mouth contorted as he faced the scientist, but he stopped just short of a growl. The woman’s face took on a gentle demeanor, her words anything but. “What you’re doing is an aberration. You have to stop.”

Not the breathtaking end-of-the-snippet that I would have liked, but ten sentences only get you so far. In the meantime, you could read the entire book, by picking up your own copy of  The Cure. Also, be sure to go check out the rest of the Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday snippets. Stay tuned for next week's continuation!

  1. Somehow, I don't think he's going to stop - until it's too late.

PS I keep waiting for someone to say, "Genesis, What's that? or "Project Genesis, I presume." ;)

  2. I don't think *she* (Mila) is going to stop either... ;-)

  3. Great juxtaposition between his reaction and hers--says so much about each of their characters!

  4. Nice interplay. I remember this scene...Shhh...I won't tell. :D

  5. I love your choice of words. It keeps up the tension and makes the characters really distinctive. Can't wait for next week.

  6. I do so enjoy a tension-riddled snippet. I only wish she had been able to say how she *really* felt about the project. The Guardian seems so lukewarm about it.

  7. Oh, the Guardians get a little more insistent later in the scene...trust me. ;-)

  8. Lot of continuous and rising tension here, very nicely drawn out. I love the dialogue.

  9. Great tension. I'll have to check out the entire story now.

  10. I need to go back and read the two preceding snippets before reading this again. From just my first reading, the tension smacks me across the face and throws me in the dumpster.

  12. Don't you hate it when your bluff gets called right off the bat. Takes the dialogue into dangerous grounds waiting to hear what comes next. Great snippet!!

  13. There's plenty of dangerous grounds throughout this book...trust me. ;-)

  14. I like the interaction of the Guardians with each other.

But I don't think she's going to listen and stop... (where'd be the fun in that?)

  15. It does somewhat lend itself to predictability...if not for continued conflict, how would a story progress? :-)

  16. Perhaps, but it still keeps us hanging on the question 'what the hell IS this project?!' :)

  17. Well, then, I definitely need to provide a continuation snippet this week... ;-)
