SFFS: A Snippet From DEATH BRINGS VICTORY

Welcome to another installment of Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday on the blog. Thanks for all the feedback you give on my snippets, and be sure to go visit all of the other writers through the SFFS link above as well.

I've decided to put an end to my snippets from "Genesis" but I sadly have nothing new in the pipeline to post. This means, I get to put up material from my published works instead. Hopefully everyone already knew about and bought my latest Aston West novel, Death Brings Victory, and has read it from cover to cover. If so, read this snippet and act shocked. If you haven't done any of these things, then read this snippet and go get yourself a copy. And of course, Aston's fans will be glad to know his luck hasn't changed one bit:
“If there’s something I’ve said or done to upset you, I’d appreciate you letting me know.”

We stepped out through the large doorway into the central hub, heading for the opposite side of the room.

“It’s nothing,” she told me.

I heard an explosion before the shockwave knocked me to the ground. While confusion reigned, I looked back at the bar, engulfed in flames. They hadn’t extinguished, so at least the outer hull hadn’t been breached.

My thoughts were immediately on Rione. My vision grew narrow and darkened as I looked over at her limp body, unable to tell whether she was alive or dead. My instinct was to check her, but I couldn’t move my limbs. Fear screamed through my body as darkness enveloped my mind.
Ahhhhhh...feels good to put him through the ringer like this. Again, I always enjoy your comments, so be sure to leave some. Hope all of my American friends had a Happy Thanksgiving, and we'll catch you next week with another snippet.

Lol, when a woman says 'it's nothing' you're in big trouble even before the place blows up!

Indeed so! :-D

Ah, poor Aston. Into the fire again. Literally.

I feel a strong temptation to report you to the RSPCC (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Characters) for torturing your hero and his lady in this fashion... Good, action-filled sequence - thanks!

It's his comfort zone...what can I say? :-)

Peter, I'm not sure Aston would know what to do if he wasn't being tortured...heh. :-)

I love those moments when it's all breaking down and the character is sort of standing outside it all watching and what goes through their minds.

T. M. Hunter said...

I love those moments as well... ;-)

I hope she's alive so she can tell him what was wrong.

I knew things were going to go south when Rione said it was nothing, but I didn't expect that kind of explosion. I love the obstacles you've set up for Aston. It's great fun to see characters try and jump through flaming hoops without being singed.

T.M., only those who've read the novel can know for sure...one would think that I'd keep a main character around, but anyone who read my novel FRIENDS IN DEED knows that may not be a wise assumption. :-)

J.M., this one has plenty of flaming hoops throughout...not sure if I should break out the aloe vera for Aston or not... ;-)

Well, I know what happens next, but I won't spoil the fun for others. I'm nearly done with this book (admittedly, I'v been on a no-reading slump lately, and this one got shelved for a couple weeks. Don't worry, I'm back in it and determined to finish it this weekend).

Interesting...I've been in a no-writing slump for many weeks. On the flip side, I've gotten plenty of reading done. :-)

Somehow I was thinking that a shock wave traveled at the speed of sound, but I'm too lazy to look it up. Heat and light would have hit him first, though, but I doubt human senses could tell!
Jarn's at his usual place, btw--thought I'd signed him up but I guess not.

It's business as usual for Aston! Makes me wonder how much his monthly insurance premiums would be.

T. M. Hunter said...

At such a close distance, Aston probably doesn't even remember which he *really* felt or heard first...but it would have been pretty much one after the other.

Patrick, I guess it's good that he's self-insured, because no company in the universe would take him on, I'm sure... :-)

Uh oh, can't move, fade to black. Bad to be so vulnerable!

T. M. Hunter said...

Yup! That's our Aston, Mr. Vulnerable. :-)

I don't know what happens next, so I'm very intrigued. :)

Only one way to find out... ;-)

Thanks for stopping by!
